In these times of satellite TV and central heating the idea of a wood burning stove seems like a quaint tidbit from a bygone era, but nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, wood stoves had their heyday back before the rise of gas furnaces and air conditioning, but now that we are approaching peak oil and our utility bills are more expensive than ever the demand for wood stoves is rising faster than the cost your gas bill. This newfound popularity is bringing the wood burning stove back from antiquity and into the ultra modern home thanks to many factors:
First of all, owning a wood stove is far less expensive than paying a monthly gas bill. The stove itself can range in price from several hundred to several thousand dollars, but for many people that is the only expense they pay. People in rural areas can simply scavenge wood near their homes, and those in urban areas can easily get discarded untreated wood from alleys and off of warehouses that use untreated pallets.
Modern wood stoves also look extremely attractive. Gone are the old cast iron kettle stoves of the past, now even inexpensive stoves are designed to look natural in surroundings as diverse as an old fashioned cottage to an ultra modern condo. Just a quick glance at the various models offered will show you how diverse and attractive they have grown.
Lastly, burning wood is environmentally friendly. Burning fossil fuels produces many harmful emissions, notably carbon, whereas a wood stove is carbon neutral and even the gases released can be re-fed into the fire to make it burn hotter and cleaner. When used in combination with an ecofan or other accessories it is possible to heat your entire house with almost no environmental footprint to speak of.
